Development Programs

PMG offers an integrated series of development programs for staff at varying levels.

Fundamentals for Supervisors

FFS class

Fundamentals for Supervisors is a three-day program that provides essential skills required by those new to supervising the work of others, leading project teams, or who have not received prior supervisory training. The goal of the FFS is to increase an individual’s performance as a supervisor and to provide practical tools to enhance staff performance.

The program addresses the unique challenges of a public service setting and is open to local, state, and federal employees, non-profit, and private businesses as well. Learning occurs in a safe and encouraging environment in which the facilitators encourage active involvement by participants.

Institute objectives

The FFS provides new supervisors with the opportunity to:

  • Assess current supervisory skills and develop action plans for improvement.
  • Practice enhanced listening and feedback skills.
  • Effectively manage the performance and development of staff.
  • Build and lead effective teams.
  • Develop strategies to retain effective performers from all generations.

Virginia Commonwealth University is pleased to offer conference participants 2.3 continuing educational units for their attendance at this event. For human resource professionals, FFS and ESI provides 22.5 professional development credits.

Upon acceptance to the FFS, please review the Cost, Policies, and Checklists page and the FAQ page to help you prepare for the class.
